M1 Helps AYA Youth Collective Secure $125,000 Grant

6/10/2025

In a powerful example of community partnership, Members First Credit Union (M1) has secured a $125,000 matching grant from the Federal Home Loan Bank of Indianapolis (FHLBank Indianapolis) for AYA Youth Collective (AYA), a nonprofit dedicated to supporting youth experiencing housing instability in West Michigan.

Through the Community Multiplier - Member Match Program, Members First contributed $12,500, unlocking a 10-to-1 match from FHLBank Indianapolis to support AYA’s drop-in center and housing programs at a pivotal time.

“This grant came at the exact right moment,” said Lauren Gamelin VanKeulen CEO at AYA. “We needed a member of FHLBank Indianapolis who believed in our mission and was ready to act- and we couldn’t think of anyone better than Members First. The M1 team stepped up without hesitation.”

Back in February 2025, AYA was bracing for uncertain times. With potential shifts in federal funding, the opportunity to apply for the competitive Community Multiplier grant arrived suddenly - and with it, high stakes. The clock was ticking, and success depended on finding a financial partner who was not only eligible, but completely committed.

Members First was ready.

“We’ve always believed in AYA’s mission and the incredible impact they have on young lives. They are a vital resource in our community,” said Carrie Iafrate, President and CEO of Members First Credit Union. “When the call came, we didn’t hesitate. We are honored to have collaborated with AYA and FHLBI to elevate impact.”

The credit union already had a strong relationship with AYA – supporting their annual Coming Home Gala, volunteering regularly, and sharing a deep belief in showing up for young people. When the need arose, the team moved fast.

“AYA is a lifeline for hundreds of youth navigating housing instability, parenting, and mental health challenges,” said Kristen Williamson, Community Relations Leader at Members First. “When the opportunity came up, our team cut through the red tape. We don’t wait when it comes to opening doors.”

This grant marked a significant milestone—it was one of the first of its kind from FHLBank Indianapolis focused on supporting non-profits working in affordable housing. Within just 10 days, the Community Multiplier funds were fully deployed—AYA secured theirs just in time. The grant is now helping sustain vital, life-changing services such as mental health care, transportation, meals, job support, and transitional housing.

But the impact goes far beyond funding.

AYA is known for its wraparound care: a welcoming drop-in center that serves nearly 1,000 youth annually and long-term housing programs that, according to the organization, boast a 90% success rate in helping young people find stable, independent living situations.

“This isn’t just a grant,” shared Gamelin VanKeulen. “It’s the kind of support that gives us the room to keep walking alongside our youth, meeting their needs today and helping them build a stronger tomorrow. Members First stepped in as a true partner—and together, we’re creating stability, dignity, and opportunity.”

This is how thriving communities are created - through fast action, mutual trust, and real connection. For AYA and Members First, it’s a reflection of what’s possible when you show up for each other.
